This post from DE VOLKSTEM (one of several South African newspapers in AFRIKAANS during the late 19th and early 20th century) intrigued me, as RAG BOOK was translated to SKEURBOEK - a book that can be torn. Long ago Grandmothers gave Gifts to Good Children. DEAN’S RAG BOOK CO., LTD. emphasized that a GIFT  should be Good, even if the CHILD was not that Good.
